search primary menu skip to content about search for: alex jones is a hoax february 24, 2017 chapman 3,387 comments an animatronic, maybe. i don’t believe he’s real. his is a vitriol fueled by the far reaches of right-ness; a right so right that it leaves geometrics behind. it is surely programmed – his right-ness. or it is left posing as right. perhaps? perhaps his is a left so left that it will swerve right into the fray. right right into the maelstrom of eugenics and homophobic sci/fi tomfoolery. a left that shows right to be wrong. or not… regardless, i don’t believe his heart beats like mine: his of circuitry and static. i don’t believe his pumpernickel slicks the run of the yolk at the local diner. his stars don’t beguile him as he travels, alone, to the next truther convention. i refuse to believe that the ingrown hair on his chest aches when the fibers of his undershirt rub against it. he is a hoax, readers. his eyes twitch on the stage like good clockwork. his artificiality inspires. see him guffaw, folks! see him pontificate! he is always right, that alex jones. even when he’s wrong. label art: extemporaneous sojourn january 28, 2016 echapman 2,415 comments it started with a beer. i sat down to write, opened a bottle of beer, and thought: i wonder who created this label art. it was a bully! porter ( boulevard brewing ) and the art on the label, while not overly profound, is evocative of art. i turned to the internet for an answer. my research was side-tracked almost instantly, however, as i perused the site, beerlabelsart.com . here the artistic beer label is curated; the topic is explored. here the evocation is surpassed. admittedly, the site yet stands at the outset of the exploration, still, my attention was drawn by a brief entry on the recently updated great lakes brewing company (glbc) labels. most notably, the medium chosen by the artist, (image: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/559713059916347143/) (image: http://www.beerlabelsart.com/darren-booth-and-great-lakes/) darren booth. this is a link to the beer labels art page and this links to his own page . i learned that darren booth, an accomplished artist, has quite a portfolio and that his medium is a combination of collage and paint. it was this medium, with its potential for texture and inter-communication, that proved exciting. here are a few examples, which i will site in honest lieu of obtaining permission to use: (image: http://darrenbooth.com/#/fox/) (image: http://darrenbooth.com/archive/#/bull/) i have added this to my list of future moments: to see one of these works in person. to know more closely the appearance of the fabric or object; to see the collage through the paint. it is in this territory, this want for texture, that the digital world fails us. one is reminded of art, yet the senses are limited by mediation. now, don’t get me wrong: this is no new medium and i am making no claims to mr. booth’s standing in the array of artists with examples of work in the medium. but this was happening and the moment found me flushed with enough enthusiasm to explore contemporary collage by way of the collage artists of america . as the topic is collage, allow me to paste in their self-description, direct from the “about us” portion of their web site. originally known as california collagists, collage artists of america was founded in 1988 by nine los angeles-area women artists proficient in a variety of media who sought to explore the art of collage. two years later the current name of the organization was adopted and membership grew across the united states. caa’s membership includes art instructors, professional artists who exhibit widely, mid-career and beginning artists, art students and those who have an interest in and love for the art of collage. caa holds general meetings five times a year in which stimulating programs are presented by guest artists renowned for their work in collage and assemblage. noble enough, yet it was the notice of their guest artist for the january meeting (we missed it, the meeting was on jan. 22) that whisked me away again. the artist, david lovejoy , is a self-described los angeles thingmaker, which i can dig even though it bugs me: “thingmaker”…like, me too, and, for me, his art is kind of like that: i can dig it. some of it bugs me, but a few images of his work caught my eye. https://david-lovejoy.squarespace.com/assemblage/ (image: https://david-lovejoy.squarespace.com/bounce/) regarding the second image, i’ll paste in a quote from the thingmaker webpage: “bounce” – a commission from the spring arts tower in downtown los angeles. the owner wished to create a playful view for the tenants facing the building’s interior. the design was intended to portray a stop-motion representation of a child’s play ball bouncing through the space, and could not have been installed without the help & wisdom of artist clare graham. i’m quite impressed by the piece and recommend checking it out on lovejoy’s page , if nothing more than to see the motion of the thing. friends, it was this idea of motion that brings this report near conclusion. something in the movement of lovejoy’s “bounce” was musical and it was to a collage of sound that i made my final turn. quick research on the topic brought charles ives to the fore. it was to his piece, central park in the dark, that i began to type, imposing my own mechanical noises over the surface of the music. and it is with this track that i prepare to take leave. the hour has grown late and the journey has been adequately described. the only course forward would be to proceed into the speculative… this i will do, but concisely, for the work of wolfghang phuck would have been my next turn. a collagist of sound, wolfghang’s sparse output has produced, at least, this: http://thenewtangent.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/03-not-bothered.mp3 (artist: wolfghang phuck – song: not bothered) which is, if nothing more, evocative of art. i just finished reading william burroughs’ junky january 28, 2016 chapman 4,061 comments if only burroughs had seen this mcgruff ad… teenbeat records: play these ten albums january 28, 2016 chapman 1,958 comments it was 1993 when i first heard unrest’s imperial f.f.r.r. i was wearing ocean pacific. the winter was mild. i had braces then and the brackets were multi-colored. in utero played on everyone’s discman. teenbeat records had the best catalogs. when you ordered from them, you were sent buttons, 7-inch records, a note, a card. there was a forgotten fanzine that recommended vomit launch and eggs. the cover of the zine had a tree and a rabbit. teenbeat had as many solid releases in the early to mid-90s as other heavy-hitters like merge or k. you might remember some of the tracks – others have faded into mix-tape nostalgia or esoteric pandora radio stations. teenbeat still exists in the 21st century. their releases are limited, idiosyncratic, and always stamped with label leader, mark robinson’s, aesthetic. but the 90s, man. those were good years for jangly, shoegazey, sound-collagey, sometimes noisey pop. check out the teenbeat records releases below: 10)sexual milkshake: sing along in hebrew (1992) sloppy, catchy, weirdo-pop with lavish song-titles, such as “booty chow for the suture” 9)tel aviv: the shape of fiction (1997) mellow, jangly, subdued and understated 8)tuscadero: the pink album (1994) similar to cub and other “cuddlecore” bands of the early 90s. cute punk rock voices with some attitude 7 ) true love always: when will you be mine (1997) as teenbeat as it gets from the first jangled note. like tel aviv, but lyrically more emotive. not simply a relic of the 90s, as their 5th album will be released in 2016 6)blast off country style: c’mon and blast off country (1995) sexual milkshake and two faced judy members came together to form this short-lived punk rock outfit. shades of 60s girl groups with a penchant for weirdness 5)versus: secret swingers (1994) moody atmospheric indie roc
